WAKOL D 3540 Cork Adhesive

WAKOL D 3540 is a solvent-free, water-based contact adhesive made from synthetic polymers and latex. It is designed for cork tiles with natural cork backing and can be used on properly prepared absorbent and non-absorbent substrates, including walls.

The adhesive is applied to both the substrate and the back of the cork tile. It must dry until clear, dry to the touch, and slightly glossy before the tile is placed. Once the two coated surfaces meet, there is little opportunity to reposition the tile.

Suitable applications and substrates

WAKOL D 3540 is intended for cork tiles with natural cork backing on properly prepared absorbent and non-absorbent substrates. The technical sheet lists both residential and commercial applications and permits use on walls. Do not use this adhesive for vinyl cork flooring.

The substrate must be permanently dry, smooth, flat, structurally sound, securely fastened, and clean. Remove dust, oil, grease, paint, wax, old adhesive, loose primers, sealers, and other materials that could reduce adhesion.

WAKOL D 3540 can be used above, on, or below grade, but it must not be used where there is excessive moisture or hydrostatic pressure. Concrete must be moisture tested. Concrete above 80% relative humidity requires WAKOL PU 280 Moisture Barrier; the D 3540 technical sheet permits up to 100% relative humidity only when the adhesive is used with WAKOL PU 280 as directed.

Jobsite conditions

Install only after doors and windows are in place and the HVAC system is operating under normal living conditions. WAKOL specifies a jobsite temperature of 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C) and relative humidity of 40% to 75%. Acclimate the cork and other installation materials to these conditions before beginning.

How to apply WAKOL D 3540

1. Read the current WAKOL technical data sheet and safety data sheet before starting.
2. Confirm that the cork backing and substrate are compatible, then complete all required cleaning, leveling, moisture testing, and preparation.
3. Stir the adhesive well before use.
4. Roll an even, uniform coat over the full back of the cork tile and the prepared substrate. WAKOL recommends a LOBA Roller Microfiber 60-80 or 100-120.
5. If desired, coat the tile backing up to 24 hours before installation. The substrate must be coated at the time of installation.
6. Allow the adhesive to dry until it is clear, dry to the touch, and slightly glossy. Apply a second coat after the first has dried if full coverage is uncertain.
7. Place each tile directly into position because little repositioning is possible after the coated surfaces meet.
8. Set the complete tile surface with a soft-headed rubber mallet with a face of at least 2 inches, following the WAKOL instructions.

The adhesive has a typical flash time of 30-45 minutes and a working time of 2-3 hours. When tiles are pre-coated, the working time is reduced to approximately 1-1.5 hours. Temperature, humidity, and substrate absorbency can change these times.

How much adhesive do I need

Measure the installation area, divide it by the expected job-specific coverage, and round up to full containers. The published maximum is 180 sq ft per gallon when both the tile backing and substrate are coated. Allow additional material for absorbent or textured surfaces, a second coat, testing, and application loss.

Storage and cleanup

Clean tools and fresh adhesive with water before the product dries. Store the unopened container at approximately 70°F (21°C), keep it above 40°F (5°C), and do not allow it to freeze. The stated shelf life is 12 months in an unopened container when stored as directed.
