Cork oak forest,  Montado in Portuguese, is one of the richest ecosystems in the world. It stands among the 36 crucial ecosystems globally that play a vital role in preserving biodiversity, on par with renowned areas like the Amazon, the African Savanna, and Borneo. These forests nurture a distinct and delicate ecology, providing a habitat for rare and endangered species. 

More than 200 animal species and 135 plant species thrive in the optimal conditions provided by the cork oak forest.

90% of all cork oak forests are concentrated in the Mediterranean basin: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Algeria. Portugal, which has a third of the total area of cork oaks, is the largest producer, being responsible for 55% of the world's cork production. Spread across 2.7 million hectares globally, cork oak forests serve as essential habitats for various flora and fauna. Beyond fostering rich biodiversity, these trees play a crucial role in capturing millions of tons of carbon dioxide each year, making them instrumental in combating global warming.
