Cork wall panel guide

How to Install Cork Wall Panels

A little preparation makes all the difference. Follow these six steps to install OakViva Classic and 3D cork wall panels using our recommended contact adhesive method. Read the complete guide and your adhesive instructions before starting.

What you will need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Level or chalk line
  • Sharp utility knife
  • Metal straightedge
  • Adhesive roller and tray
  • Soft, non-marking rubber mallet with a face at least 2 inches wide
  • Clean cloth

Six steps to a finished wall

Work methodically and complete each stage before moving to the next. Temperature, humidity, the wall surface and your adhesive can all affect the installation.

Acclimate and inspect

Unpack the panels and leave them in the installation room for at least 48 hours. Maintain stable room conditions for at least 72 hours before, during and after installation, with 40–60% relative humidity. Check the temperature requirements in both the full guide and your adhesive instructions.

Inspect every panel before bonding. Cork naturally varies in color and texture, so open two or three cartons and mix the panels for a balanced appearance. Set aside any damaged or visibly defective panels and contact us before proceeding. Panels installed with obvious visual defects are not eligible for warranty coverage.

Prepare the wall

The wall must be sound, smooth, flat, clean and completely dry. Remove wallpaper, old wall coverings, loose material and anything that could prevent adhesion. Repair uneven areas and let fillers dry fully.

Painted, primed or porous walls need preparation compatible with the chosen adhesive. Do not assume a painted surface is ready to bond. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s requirements and test a small area first.

Plan the layout

Measure the wall and allow 5–10% extra material for cuts and waste. Arrange the panels without adhesive to check the pattern, color balance and fit. Mark level horizontal and vertical reference lines; do not rely on a floor, ceiling or corner being straight. Adjust the starting position to avoid narrow cuts at the edges.

Planning Stripe Rhombus: All other OakViva wall panels are rectangular. Plan the diamond-shaped pattern and rib direction before applying adhesive. Explore Stripe Rhombus .

Apply adhesive to both surfaces

Roll an even coat of contact adhesive over the entire panel back and the prepared wall. Cover both surfaces fully, including the edges. For WAKOL D 3540, allow both films to become clear, dry to the touch and slightly glossy before joining them. Do not bond while the adhesive is still wet.

Drying and working times depend on the adhesive and room conditions. Follow the technical data sheet, application instructions and work in manageable sections.

Position and secure each panel

Align each panel carefully with your guidelines before the coated surfaces touch. Contact adhesive leaves very little opportunity to reposition the panel.

Set each panel immediately with the soft, non-marking rubber mallet, following the full guide and adhesive instructions. Ensure firm contact across the whole panel, including edges and corners, and take care with raised 3D surfaces. Check alignment as you go.

Trim and finish

Measure and dry-fit edge pieces before bonding. Cut on a protected work surface using a sharp utility knife and metal straightedge. Check the finished wall for alignment, secure edges and adhesive residue.

Remove fresh adhesive promptly as directed by the adhesive manufacturer. Let the adhesive cure as specified and keep room conditions stable.

Where to install

Use in dry indoor areas. Avoid repeated water exposure, high humidity, direct high heat, grease and oil exposure, and prolonged direct sunlight. Ask us before using panels on ceilings or unusual surfaces.

Simple care

Dust gently or use a soft vacuum brush. When needed, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid soaking, abrasive cleaners, solvents and ammonia.
